Inclusive Design

Inclusive design should not be seen as a special favour for a minority group, because products that are easier and safer for vulnerable users often benefit everyone.

Poorly designed public facilities can reduce disabled people’s independence and make them more dependent on others in daily life.

When safety standards are based on a narrow definition of the “average user”, they may fail to protect people whose bodies or needs are different.

Ill-fitting protective equipment can put workers at risk and prevent them from performing their jobs effectively.

Designs that ignore the needs of different users can create hidden costs, including lower productivity, discomfort and unnecessary energy use.

Inclusive design makes products easier for a wider range of people to use.

Public services should be designed to span economic, social and cultural barriers.

be accessible to somebody:对某人来说可使用、可进入。

Public transport should be accessible to elderly people and wheelchair users.

without any adaptation:无需额外改造。

A well-designed product can be used by different groups without any adaptation.

Universal design also considers the needs of people with cognitive difficulties.

Adjustable desks can reduce back and neck problems among office workers.

Sensor taps are useful for people with dexterity or mobility issues.

with the elderly in mind:考虑到老年人。

Many apps are now designed with the elderly in mind.

Using only male crash-test dummies has serious safety implications for women.

Employers should provide well-fitting personal protective equipment for all workers.

Ill-fitting PPE can hamper workers and increase the risk of accidents.

metabolic rates:代谢率。

Differences in metabolic rates can affect how comfortable people feel in an office.

A good example of inclusive design is a sensor tap. You don’t need to press or twist anything, so it is easier for children, elderly people and people with mobility problems to use.

I think technology companies should design more products with older users in mind, because many elderly people have poorer eyesight or find it difficult to use small buttons and complicated menus.

Public transport should be wheelchair-friendly. If buses or trains are not accessible, disabled people may not be able to go out independently.

In my opinion, workplaces should not use one standard design for everyone. For example, protective clothing should fit both men and women properly, otherwise it can become uncomfortable or even dangerous.

必背句

Good design should adapt to users, rather than forcing users to adapt to the product.

A design that works only for the “average user” may exclude people whose needs are different.

Inclusive design can improve fairness, safety and comfort at the same time.

Some people think companies should be legally required to design products and workplaces that are accessible to all users, while others believe this should be left to businesses themselves. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
